What a plumbing quote is for

A quote is a firm price. Once your customer accepts it, that is the number — so it needs an expiration date, a defined scope, and clear terms on what falls outside it.

For plumbers selling to homeowners, landlords, and general contractors, the quote is usually the only thing the customer compares side by side against two competitors. It is doing sales work whether you designed it to or not.

The unit that trips this trade up: Plumbing prices per fixture and per linear foot of pipe — mixing the two on one document is where plumbing quotes get confusing.

Non-negotiables

What every plumbing quote must have

Line items

What plumbers bill for

These are the lines that show up on most plumbing quotes, with the unit each is normally priced in. Ranges are illustrative planning figures, not market data — your own costs, region, and margin decide the real number.

Line itemUnitTypical range
Service call / diagnosticeach$85–$250
Water heater — tank, supplied and installedeach$1,400–$3,200
Tankless water heater, installedeach$3,200–$6,500
Repipe — copper or PEXlinear ft$8–$22
Fixture set (toilet, sink, faucet)each$250–$900
Drain clearing / hydro jettingeach$250–$850
Sewer camera inspectioneach$150–$450
Labor — journeyman plumberhour$95–$190

Typical deposit convention: Materials deposit on large jobs; service work typically billed on completion.

Worked example

Plumbing quote example

A realistic job, priced line by line, with the arithmetic shown the way a customer sees it:

50-gallon water heater replacement Q-0042 · Example quote
DescriptionQtyUnit priceLine total
50-gal gas water heater — 6-yr tank warranty1$1,450.00$1,450.00
Expansion tank and seismic strapping1$185.00$185.00
Permit and inspection1$165.00$165.00
Haul-away and disposal of old unit1$95.00$95.00
Labor — 4 hrs4$145.00$580.00
Subtotal$2,475.00
Tax (7.75%)$191.81
Total$2,666.81

Notice that every assumption is a line rather than a conversation. That is the whole difference between a quote that holds up and one that gets renegotiated in a driveway.

What goes wrong

Three mistakes that cost plumbers money

Quoting a repipe before opening a wall

Every repipe quote should state what happens when the wall comes off. Name the allowance for concealed damage on the document, or you are absorbing it.

Not separating diagnostic from repair

If the service call fee rolls silently into the repair, customers who decline the repair feel billed for nothing. Show the diagnostic as its own line and state whether it credits toward the work.

Skipping the drywall question

Plumbers cut drywall; customers assume plumbers patch it. Put patching in scope or explicitly out of scope. This single line prevents more disputes than any other on a plumbing quote.

Questions

Plumbing quote FAQ

The diagnostic fee and whether it credits toward the work; fixtures and materials by model; pipe type and linear footage for repipes; permit and inspection; labor; what happens to drywall and finish surfaces; and the warranty on parts and labor separately.
Give a firm price for the diagnostic and the immediate stop-the-water action, then quote the permanent repair separately once you can see it. Trying to quote the whole thing at 2am from a phone description is how plumbers lose money.
State it explicitly either way. Most plumbers exclude finish patching, but if the document is silent the customer reasonably assumes the wall gets put back the way they found it.
